The Mental Math Shortcut

A very handy trick: miles × 8 ÷ 5 = kilometers. Since 1.6 is close to 8/5, this gives you a near-exact answer.

Example: 10 miles → 10 × 8 = 80, then 80 ÷ 5 = 16 km. Exact answer: 16.09 km.

Converting Speed: mph to km/h

The same conversion factor applies to speed. 60 mph = 60 × 1.60934 = 96.56 km/h.

Common speed conversions:

  • 30 mph = 48.3 km/h (residential speed limit)
  • 60 mph = 96.6 km/h (highway driving)
  • 70 mph = 112.7 km/h (US interstate)
  • 100 km/h = 62.1 mph (European motorway limit)
